Our rare Arctic keta salmon is caught by native Iñupiat people in the cold, pristine waters of Alaska’s Northwest Arctic region.

Arctic keta salmon is distinguished by its subtle color, firm flesh, and very high omega-3 levels, which rival those in king salmon and exceed the omega-3 levels in sockeye, silver, or pink salmon.

It’s ideal for those who prefer mild-flavored salmon, and lends itself to seasonings and flavors ... such as our signature seafood marinades and rubs.

Those features result from the fact that Arctic keta roam further, and undergo longer migrations, than any other salmon of their species.

About the Arctic keta harvest

The native Iñupiat people live just north of the Arctic Circle, and have long relied on keta salmon (Oncorhynchus keta).

They catch keta salmon by hand in Kotzebue Sound … a 7,000 square-mile arm of western Alaska’s Chukchi Sea.

Fed by the pristine waters of the Noatak, Selawik, and Kobuk Rivers, the nutrient-rich Kotzebue Sound provides an ideal habitat for ocean-caught keta.

Within hours of harvest, these exceptional fish are processed at the local Iñupiat plant, flash-frozen, and shipped directly to Vital Choice.

About the Iñupiat people

The Arctic Keta fishery is a foundation of the Kotzebue Sound community.

That remote Arctic Circle coast is populated largely by the Iñupiat people, who’ve inhabited the region since at least the 15th century.

Kotzebue residents depend on subsistence fishing for their personal use and commercial fishing for income.

Fishing has traditionally been the lifeblood of the community, and salmon are revered as a precious resource.

"Challenging Fish" Sarah on 08/14/2017 07:35 Review: I purchased this fish hoping it would be a less fishy fish, but I've found it to be the complete opposite. Both the smell and taste are very strong (and the smell permeates the kitchen long after cooking). I am also finding it to be very challenging to cook - much more so than any of the other salmon's sold here. I'm finding that it quickly goes from undercooked to overcooked which for this fish means it becomes extremely tough. I am not very skilled in the kitchen, so I am sure this is largely due to my ineptitude, but this fish is giving me so much trouble I'm really regretting purchasing a five found bag. Hopefully after a few more tries I'll be able to update this review more positively, but off the bat this is not a fish for a novice in the kitchen or one to purchase if you don't enjoy the smell of fish! Keep frozen at or below 0° F (-18° C).

  • Vacuum-sealed fish held under these conditions should retain its quality for at least six to 12 months.
  • Shellfish and lean white fish (halibut, cod) generally have a longer freezer life than fatty fish (salmon, tuna, sablefish).
  • NOTE: Seafood stored in frost-free freezers should be used within 3 months.

Thawing instructions

Thaw under refrigeration at or below 38 degrees Fahrenheit (3 degrees Celsius). Before thawing, puncture or remove packaging.

For quick-thawing, place frozen package in cool water for approximately 20 to 30 minutes, just until contents are flexible.

Once thawed, immediately cook or refrigerate (if refrigerating, puncture package). Prior to cooking, do not allow fish to reach temperatures above 38 degrees Fahrenheit (3 degrees Celsius).

Cooking and serving tips

Take care not to overcook salmon, lest it turn out dry.

  • Rinse fish quickly in cold, clean water.
  • Cook in a medium-hot lightly oiled pan, under a broiler, or on the grill for 6-8 minutes, until only the very center is still translucent.
  • Remove fish from heat and let it "self-cook” another two to three minutes, until just cooked through to center before serving.
  • NOTE: It is perfectly safe and healthful to serve our fish raw or partly cooked, because flash-freezing has rendered it 100% sushi-safe.
  • Enliven your fish entree with seasonings such as Vital Choice Organic Salmon Marinade Mix, Organic Lemon-Pepper, or other herb-spice blends.
  • Add the seasonings of your choice to a little olive oil and marinate the fish, refrigerated, for 30-60 minutes or overnight. Or, simply mist fish lightly with organic extra virgin olive oil or macadamia nut oil and dust with seasonings before cooking.
