At Vital Choice we are constantly on the lookout for the most environmentally sustainable packaging and shipping solutions.
Until 2014, we had exclusively shipped our goods in boxes made of extruded polystyrene or EPS. (Styrofoam is the brand name of one EPS product.)
EPS is about 99% air (and only one percent plastic), making it very light. This reduces shipping-related carbon emissions to a minimum, giving EPS a very small "carbon footprint".
However, few recycling programs* accept EPS, so we have long looked for a packaging solution that met our durability, weight, and insulating requirements, and offered an even better eco-profile.
Fortunately, in 2014, we found such a solution: The cotton-and-cardboard containers we call SeaSavers, which we have been gradually introducing as a replacement for EPS boxes.
We now ship many of our orders in SeaSaver boxes, which consist of biodegradable cotton packing/insulating material, inside a biodegradable/recyclable cardboard box.
Like our EPS boxes, our new SeaSaver boxes offer a high insulation value, sturdiness, water resistance, biological inactivity, resistance to absorbing foods or odors, and sterility.
The SeaSaver boxes do cost us substantially more ... an expense we are absorbing, to avoid raising our shipping rates.
Perfect solutions are hard to come by, but we are committed to reducing our environmental footprint in all we do.
*NOTE: In addition to paying to offset 100% of our shipment-associated greenhouse gas emissions, we also offer an innovative "cube-cycle" recycling program for our EPS boxes, which you can learn more about at www.vitalgreen.com
