Fatty fish provide vitamin D3 … but not quite enough

The best known food sources of vitamin D3 by far are fatty fish—with albacore tuna (540 IU per 3.5oz/100gm serving) and wild Alaskan salmon ranking as the richest.

Thanks to its plankton-heavy diet, wild sockeye salmon tops the list, averaging 680 IU per 3.5 oz serving.

The next richest seafood sources are silver and king salmon, sardines, and mackerel (230 to 350 IUs per 3.5 oz serving).

So, while fatty fish offer more vitamin D3 than any other foods, even folks who enjoy them frequently need supplemental amounts to reliably ensure that they get the 1,000 IUs per day that experts recommend.

Should I still take an omega-3 supplement?

The U.S. recommended daily allowances (RDAs) for vitamin D are 200 IU (birth to age 50), 400 IU (age 51-70) and 600 IU (age 71-plus). Substantial peer-reviewed evidence supports leading researchers' recommendations that the U.S. Institute of Medicine raise the U.S. RDAs substantially. To help ensure optimal health, most researchers involved in vitamin D studies recommend minimum blood levels ranging from 90 to 120 nmol/L (36 to 48 ng/mL),and normal human blood levels* of vitamin D extend above 200 nmol/L (80 ng/mL). Most experts say that the evidence supports a daily intake of at least 1,000 IU via food and supplements, and most prefer an intake of 2,000 IU to 4,000 IU per day*. This intake level applies to all people, but is especially advised for darker skinned people who spend less than 30 minutes per day in strong sunlight.
