Omega-3s support the physical and mental demands placed on athletes.

Our unique supplement provides a healthful combination in each 3-softgel daily serving: 600mg omega-3s + 3000 IU Vitamin D3.

Our vitamin D3 is endorsed by Professor Michael Holick, M.D., Ph.D., the world-renowned vitamin D researcher based at Boston University.

Note: The official U.S. upper-intake limit for vitamin D is 4,000 IU/day for people aged 9 years or older, including pregnant or lactating women.

As well as enhancing general health, omega-3s and vitamin D support the extreme physical and mental demands placed on serious amateur and professional athletes.

Leading sports leagues and associations, including these, have authorized their athletes to use NSF Certified for Sport™ supplements:

  • Major League Baseball
  • MLB Players' Association
  • National Football League
  • NFL Players' Association
  • The PGA and LPGA
  • Canadian Center for Ethics in Sports

So that they can benefit from both, worry-free, we sought the prized Certified for Sport™ seal of approval from NSF, which assures athletes that our supplement is free of all substances banned by sports federations worldwide.

All Vital Choice Salmon Oil and Vitamin D supplements are made from the same pure, natural ingredients, in the same way ... but only our Salmon Oil + Vitamin D3 supplement is Certified for Sport™ by NSF.

The NSF Certified for Sport™ program enforces four key provisions and provides continual monitoring to ensure compliance with substance prohibitive lists promulgated by WADA, NSF Annex A, NFL, MLB, and NCAA:

  • Banned substance screening for products intended for professional and elite athletes.
  • Good Manufacturing Practices audits of the production facility.
  • Toxicological reviews of the product's formulation and substantiation of any product claims.
  • Annual label claim tests to ensure the product is meeting its declared nutritional values and is free from microbial and heavy metal contamination.

We are proud to partner with NSF to bring high-quality, all natural supplements to athletes serious about their sport and their health.

NSF International certifies that our Sockeye Salmon Oil provides the omega-3 levels stated on the label and meets strict U.S. and international safety standards.

About our wild sockeye salmon oil
Vital Choice Salmon Oil comes from the heads of freshly harvested wild Alaskan sockeye salmon.

Its brilliant orange color comes from astaxanthin: the carotenoid-class antioxidant that wild salmon acquire by eating krill and other zooplankton.

These unique attributes make Vital Choice Sockeye Salmon Oil a rare, powerfully health-promoting omega-3 supplement.

Wild Alaskan sockeye salmon are among the purest of all ocean fish, according to the EPA, FDA, and independent scientists. (Visit our Purity page to learn more.)

And we purify our oil using molecular distillation, which removes mercury and manmade chemical contaminants without affecting the structure or value of its omega-3 fatty acids.

"Helped with my SAD" Karen Hannah on 05/20/2018 06:54 Review: I am an epidemiologist, and I recognize that individual results are not scientifically valid. But...I have suffered from wintertime mild to moderate Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) all my adult life. This past winter season is the first time I can say that I did not feel the effects of SAD. This past season is also the first time I have taken the Vital Choice vitamin D3 supplements. I recognize it could be a total coincidence and/or placebo effect. That being said, I plan to continue to take these supplements. If you suffer from SAD, my recommendation is to try it - it can't hurt, and it might help significantly.

"Great product!" Cheryl C on 04/07/2018 13:08 Review: I began taking these because I suffer from psoriasis and it was driving me crazy. Before I finished the first bottle I saw a huge improvement and have been taking them every day since then. I recently decided to up the dosage so purchased the lower dose to supplement the high dose I was already taking. I love this product and recommend it to everyone.

"Review" Linda "Lyn" A on 01/05/2018 04:07 Review: Outstanding!!! Also, the customer service is superb! I had to wait for it but I received it thank you.

Ingredients:

Wild Alaskan sockeye salmon oil (sockeye oil, astaxanthin, non-GMO mixed tocopherols), softgel capsule (fish gelatin, glycerin*, purified water), vitamin D3** (cholecalciferol).

Contains no artificial preservatives, color, dairy, starch, wheat, yeast, sugar or soy protein.

*The glycerol in the glycerin that’s used in our softgels as part of the gelatin compound is derived entirely from vegetable sources, contains no animal products and does not come in contact with any animal-derived products until it meets the fish gelatin in the process of making our capsules.

**Like virtually all vitamin D3, ours is extracted from lanolin. (Practical marine sources of vitamin D3 are not currently available.) Lanolin is a waxy, safe, hypoallergenic substance secreted by wool-bearing animals that is commonly used in moisturizers and lip balms.

Storage

Store in a cool, dry, dark place.

You can refrigerate or freeze the oil, though there is no need, except in excessively warm room conditions. Our Salmon Oil will become cloudy if refrigerated or frozen, but this is no cause for concern. (For more, see "Cloudy Fish Oil Myth", below.)

Daily Dose: Salmon oil

The recommended dosage for healthy adults is 3 capsules daily (3,000mg of salmon oil) or as recommended by a health care professional.

This advice is based on intake recommendations from authoritative scientific bodies. To learn more, click here.

It is best to take Salmon Oil with a meal. If you experience excessive occurrences of fishy burps, try our Krill Oil or our lemon-flavored Salmon Oil.

CAUTIONS: Salmon oil should be taken at the recommended dose. Consult with your physician before taking substantially higher doses, or taking this product if you are pregnant, diabetic, allergic to fish or iodine, using blood thinners, have a diagnosed cardiac condition or immune disorder, or anticipate surgery.

Omega-3s for Mothers, Infants, and Children

Here is what widely respected pediatrician William Sears, M.D. told us in response to our question on this subject*:

  • "... experts attending a 2005 workshop recommended at least 300 mg a day for pregnant and nursing mothers (most mothers get only 20-25% of this amount, unless they take omega-3 fish oil supplements). In our medical practice we have mothers take at least 500 mg of DHA per day during pregnancy and lactation."
  • "The recommendation for infants is at least 200mg of DHA per day, which is the dosage added to infant formulas."
  • "Practically speaking, infants under one year old receive their omega-3s through mother's milk or fortified formula, but it is perfectly safe and perhaps even beneficial for infants to be given extra Vital Choice fish oil at a dose of around 300 mg a day of DHA. I stress DHA rather than EPA because DHA is the main brain growth omega 3."

NOTE: There are as yet no official omega-3 intake recommendations for children over two years of age, so please consult your pediatrician. A dose of 300 mg of DHA would be provided by 8 of our 500 mg Salmon Oil capsules, 4 of our 1000 mg capsules, or 1 teaspoon of our Liquid Salmon Oil.CAUTION: If your child has never had fish or fish oil, please check for seafood allergies (which are uncommon) by rubbing some Salmon Oil on his or her skin, in a less sensitive area such as the lower leg.

A Cloudy Fish Oil Myth

Our Salmon Oil will become cloudy if refrigerated or frozen, and this is no cause for concern. Makers of some highly refined, distilled fish oils assert, disingenuously, that if a fish oil becomes cloudy when cold this means it is not as pure or efficacious as an oil that remains clear when cold. But if a fish oil becomes cloudy when cold this simply means that it retains some of the shorter chain fatty acids -- including small amounts of saturated fatty acids -- that occur naturally in fish. In fact, most of what we know about the myriad health benefits of omega-3 fish oils comes from studies involving consumption of whole fish, which, like our Salmon Oil, contain small amounts of saturated fatty acids, which, in any case, are perfectly heart-healthful, according to the current scientific consensus.

Fish oils and blood thinners

The omega-3s in fish oil possess properties associated with “blood thinning”, but according to research by American Heart Association (AHA) consultant William Harris, Ph.D., they do not appear to pose any risk to persons taking blood-thinning drugs (e.g., Coumadin). To learn more about this research, published in the American Journal of Cardiology, see “Can Fish Oil Cause Bleeding Risks?”.

Recommended intake of vitamin D

The U.S. recommended daily allowances (RDAs) for vitamin D are 200 IU (birth to age 50), 400 IU (age 51-70) and 600 IU (age 71-plus). Substantial peer-reviewed evidence supports leading researchers' recommendations that the U.S. Institute of Medicine raise the U.S. RDAs substantially. To help ensure optimal health, most researchers involved in vitamin D studies recommend minimum blood levels ranging from 90 to 120 nmol/L (36 to 48 ng/mL), and normal human blood levels* of vitamin D extend above 200 nmol/L (80 ng/mL). Though the official upper intake limit is now 2,000 IU per day, vitamin D intake is proven safe* at a daily intake level of 10,000 IU ... which is 25 times the current RDA for adults 51 or older (400 IU). Most experts say that the evidence supports a daily intake of at least 1,000 IU via food and supplements, and most prefer an intake of 2,000 IU to 4,000 IU per day*. This intake level applies to all people, but is especially advised for darker skinned people who spend less than 30 minutes per day in strong sunlight. Darker skinned people, whose greater amount of skin pigment blocks the UV rays that make vitamin D, need more sun exposure. You will find more information in an article by vitamin D researcher professor Edward Giovannucci, M.D., Sc.D., of Harvard University's School of Public Health.
