Overwhelming evidence shows that nothing is more important to your health than what you eat … and good food choices begin with good information.
The acronym HUFA stands for “highly unsaturated fatty acids” … namely, the “long-chain” omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids essential to brain, eye, and immune system health.
It's very hard to achieve optimal health without knowing the balance of omega-3 and omega-6 HUFA in your body ... and, as needed, adjusting your diet to optimize that balance.
As Mehmet Oz, M.D., of Columbia University said, “Maintaining the right balance between omega-3 and omega-6 fats is absolutely vital for your health.” (Click to view the Dr. Oz Show on this topic.)
Our Vital Omega-3 and 6 HUFA Test™ measures the blood levels of these two families of essential nutrients, which strongly influence genetic “switches”, and hormone-like agents called prostaglandins.
In turn, the gene switches and prostaglandins influenced by omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids control inflammation and key aspects of brain, cardiovascular, immune, and metabolic health.
Until about 50 years ago, human diets contained about three parts omega-6s to one part omega-3s.
Today, the average American’s diet contains about 20 or more parts omega-6s to one part omega-3s … largely due to a steep rise in consumption of vegetable oils high in omega-6s (e.g., corn, soy, cottonseed, sunflower, and safflower).
This historically unprecedented imbalance is proven to promote inflammation, cancer, heart disease, diabetes, dementia, and other health problems.
Omega-3 and omega-6 dietary fatty acids compete for passage into your cell membranes – and eating too much omega-6 fat, as most American do – will keep your cells from getting enough omega-3s and will also promote chronic inflammation.
The devastation wrought by America's unhealthful omega imbalance motivated us to create our innovative Vital Omega-3 and 6 HUFA Test™.
Our easy, fast, accurate at-home test
The Vital Omega-3 and 6 HUFA Test™ is easy, convenient, comfortable, and accurate!
We took great care to find a lab trusted by the world’s leading fatty acid researchers, to ensure accurate results and provide an exceptionally comprehensive, meaningful analysis. (Click here to see a sample report ... requires free Adobe Reader.)
Each kit includes full instructions, and a mailer in which to send your blood sample card to our partner lab:
Allow the sample to dry for 30 minutes and mail within 24 hours or as soon as possible.
In about 21 days or less, you’ll know your personal fatty acid profile … and how your results compare to optimal levels.
Which omega-3 and omega-6 HUFA are included in your report?
The five most abundant highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA) in human blood – and the ones most significant to human health – are omega-3 EPA, DHA, and DPA and omega-6 AA and DPA (see “Fatty acid terms”, below):
However, your Vital Omega-3 and 6 HUFA Test™ measures and reports the full spectrum of all nine omega-3 and omega-6 HUFA found in human blood.
The following list shows the scientific names (e.g., docosahexaenoic acid) and alpha-numeric identifiers (e.g., 22:6w3) for all nine HUFA, as well as the acronyms (e.g., DHA) commonly used for the five major HUFA:
Omega-6 HUFA covered by your report AA (arachidonic acid - 20:4w6) • di-homo-gamma linolenic acid (20:3w6) • adrenic acid (22:4w6) • DPA (docosapentaenoic acid - 22:5w6)
**Under NY State law, any Vital Omega-3 and 6 HUFA Test™ kit intended for use to examine blood from a NY State resident must be ordered by that person's prescribing health care practitioner. And, unless we receive their written release, we can only send the test results to the prescribing practitioner.
Fatty acid terms
The term DPA refers to a fatty acid that can occur in omega-3 and/or omega-6 form in foods.
AA constitutes most of the omega-6 HUFA found in the average American's blood and cell membranes, with the other three omega-6 HUFA constituting 10 to 20 percent of the total. In terms of total omega-6s in blood, polyunsaturated (short-chain) linolenic acid constitutes 25-30 percent, while AA constitutes 8-14 percent.
Your report will contain everything you or your health advisor might want to know about your fatty acid status (see a sample report here ... requires free Adobe Reader).
And it features the two most credible measures of omega-3/6 fat-related risk of death from coronary heart disease:
% Omega-3 in HUFA*
% Omega-6 in HUFA*
*highly unsaturated fatty acids
Based on your % Omega-3 in HUFA result, we provide your Vital O-Mega™ Heart Risk Score:
Sample Vital O-Mega Result
Further, we provide several other perspectives on your fats profile ... whose significance we explain in your report:
Omega-3 Index
Total Omega-3s
Total Omega-6s
Omega-3 EPA, DHA, ALA, and DPA
Total Omega-6/Omega-3 Ratio
AA/EPA ratio
You’ll also see how your key results compare to the U.S. average and to optimal levels.
Finally, we provide a full analysis of the fatty acids in your blood – 37 in all – as well as the percentages of saturated, monounsaturated, polyunsaturated, and highly unsaturated fatty acids.
The Omega-3 Index
versus % Omega-3 in HUFA
Leading fatty acid researchers say that our test's key measure of omega-related heart risk – your % Omega-3 in HUFA – is more valuable for that purpose than the Omega-3 Index test, which was featured on the Dr. Oz show on the omega 3/6 balance topic.
However, the Omega-3 Index result has real predictive value for heart risks, so we include it in your report.
The Omega-3 Index – which is an estimate of the percent of total omega-3s in your red blood cell membranes – is mathematically derived from the total omega-3s measured in your blood. It can be hard to provide a reliably precise Omega-3 Index result for people with elevated blood triglyceride levels.
Allow the sample to dry for 30 minutes and mail within 24 hours or as soon as possible.
To ensure accurate results, The Vital Omega-3 and 6 HUFA Test™ must be taken by the date marked on the kit, which is three years from the date of production.
