Tips for using the SeafoodWATCH widget
The nifty widget to your right was created by the Monterey Bay Aquarium for the 2009 documentary film, “The End of the Line”, about overfishing*.
It turns the aquarium's famous SeafoodWATCH pocket guide into a searchable tool that lets you look up the sustainability status of various fish and regional fisheries.
As you will find, ALL Vital Choice seafood is considered sustainable. This comes as no surprise, since most of our offerings are certified sustainable by the Marine Stewardship Council, the State of Alaska, or both. For more information, see our Sustainability page.
To help you identify which of the fisheries within the guide supply our specific fish and shellfish, please note these facts:
We only sell wild Alaskan king, silver/coho, and sockeye salmon. (All three species enjoy a Best Choice/Green rating.)
Our Spot Prawns come from waters off British Columbia and have a Best/Green rating.
Our Albacore is pole-caught by trollers in the North Pacific, and tuna from this fishery rated a Best Choice/Green.
Our Sablefish (AKA “black cod”) comes from Alaska, and gets a Best Choice/Green rating, unlike sablefish from the U.S. west coast.
Only two fish we sell are not covered by this guide ... our canned Portuguese Chub Mackerel and Portuguese Sardines. Both of those fisheries are universally considered secure and fully sustainable.
*Note: We do not agree with every statement in the film, but we applaud its makers for calling attention to the issue.
