Superior wild Alaskan Sockeye
Compare supermarket Sockeye to ours and you'll see and taste a big difference!
Our premium Sockeye comes from small-scale fisheries in Southeast Alaska. And thanks to our private contacts, we can pick the cream of this superior Sockeye crop.
In contrast, most Sockeye comes from high-volume fisheries, where huge numbers are harvested in a very brief period, get crushed in crowded holds, and are handled less carefully and quickly than ours.
Pure and wholesome
Alaskan Sockeye Salmon are among the purest of all ocean fish, which is why the EPA, FDA, Alaska Division of Public Health and consumer organizations recommend wild Alaskan Salmon without reservation. To learn more about this, visit our Purity Page.
Wild vs. Farmed Salmon
Wild, free-swimming wild Sockeye Salmon boast very high levels of omega-3s.
Sockeye also rank as the single richest food source of vitamin D, with much more than Farmed Salmon.
Most farmed Salmon are raised in crowded, pest-plagued pens on
grain-based “fish chow”, usually with antibiotics and pesticides.
As a result, farmed Salmon is typically soft, greasy, and bland.
And in too many cases, industrial Salmon farms produce environmental risks or documented damage.
Clinical tests indicate that the unnaturally high levels of omega-6 fatty acids in most farmed Salmon – which result from unnatural diets and blunt the benefits of their omega-3s – can actually produce undesirable, pro-inflammatory changes in people's blood. (See “Farmed Salmon's Diet Yields Unhealthful Cardiovascular Effects” and “Farmed Fish Possess Unhealthful Fat Profiles”.) |
Sockeye vs. King and Silver Salmon
Wild Alaskan Sockeye Salmon is considerably richer than our Silver (Coho) Salmon, and a bit leaner than our King (Chinook) Salmon, with a firmer texture than either.
Sockeye Nutrition
In addition to ample protein, Sockeye provides three beneficial natural food factors in abundance: omega-3s, vitamin D and astaxanthin.
These are the amounts in each 6 oz portion, which will vary annually and by harvest location (see tab below for full Nutrition Info):
-
Omega-3s – About 2,000 mg of EPA+DHA, or four to seven times more than standard fish oil capsules.
-
Vitamin D – About 1,170 IU, or nearly triple the US RDA of 400 IU. (Most experts now advise adults to consume 1,000-2,000 IU every day.) Ounce for ounce, Sockeye Salmon provides much more vitamin D – in the optimal D3 form – than any other whole or fortified food.
-
Astaxanthin – About 6.75 mg. This red-orange pigment is a carotene-type antioxidant that, in test tube experiments, measures 500 times more powerful than vitamin E at neutralizing certain free radicals (singlet oxygen) and is 100 to 500 time better at protecting cell membranes. Thus, in key health contexts, 3.3 mg of astaxanthin packs the antioxidant punch of 300 to 1,600 mg of vitamin E.

Storage Keep frozen. Thaw overnight in refrigerator, or for faster readiness, place unopened package in cold water for 30 minutes or until fish is flexible.
Serving Tips Rinse fish quickly in cold, clean water. Cook in a medium-hot lightly oiled pan, under a broiler, or on the grill for 7-8 minutes, until only the very center is still translucent. Remove fish from heat and let it “self-cook” another two to three minutes, until just cooked through to center before serving.
NOTE: It is perfectly safe and healthful to serve our fish raw or partly cooked, because flash-freezing has rendered it 100% sushi-safe.
Enliven your fish entree with antioxidant-rich seasonings such as Vital Choice Organic Salmon Marinade Mix or other herb-spice blends. Add our Mix or the seasonings of your choice to a little olive oil and marinate the fish, refrigerated, for 30-60 minutes or overnight. Or, simply mist fish lightly with olive oil or macadamia nut oil and dust with seasonings before cooking.
